Dog Health Care-Bleeding

August 7th, 2008

In an emergency, the best thing is to be prepared, stay calm, and make quick decisions. How do you stop the bleeding from a dog laceration or puncture wound? Using direct pressure, apply a clean, dry cloth to the wound. If blood soaks through the first layer of cloth, do not remove, add more cloth so the clots that have formed are not disrupted.

As a last resort, for uncontrollable bleeding, use a tourniquet. Make it tight enough to significantly reduce the flow of blood. Loosen it every 5 minutes, and do not keep it on longer than 20 minutes. Seek medical care as soon as possible at a veterinarian’s office or emergency clinic.

is I am a Mother of two dogs and three children. Our dogs are an important part of our family. I take care in feeding my dogs a healthful well-balanced meal just as I do for my family. I must admit the treats my dogs receive are definitely more nutritious than the treats my children get. Oh well, we can't be perfect! I enjoy sharing my great tips about nutrition and health with other caregivers of dogs and want to hear about how my ramblings affect you and your companions.
