Dog Pregnancy-Puppy Mills

Friday, October 19th, 2007

I heard on the news about an actress that wants to bring public awareness about dog pregnancy in puppy mills. She has learned about the deplorable conditions of the life of a dog breed and raised in a puppy mill. Although, years ago while doing research on animal testing, I ran across information about puppy mills. I had not thought about the subject until recently. I do recall that puppy mills are the reason you must never buy a puppy from a pet store. These puppies are raised in puppy mills.

Why not buy a dog that came from a puppy mill?

True breeders are completely different than people that breed dogs simply for “the money”. There must be a significant amount of money in breeding and selling to pet stores or else people would not treat these dogs worse than any farm animal I have ever encountered.

A dog pregnancy that is a result of a puppy mill dog contributes to the deterioration in the quality of many popular breeds. Typically, no genetic testing is done on the animals to detect any serious hereditary conditions such as heart or liver disease, hip dysplasia, auto-immune disorders, etc…

It is a common practice in puppy mills to inbreed the dogs leading to temperament problems, aggressive behavior or exaggerated undesirable inherited personality traits.

How can you learn about what it means to be a true breeder. I suggest you read this article What is a Breeder?
